Belgische Toekomsten / Des Belgiques Possibles

When the children of today will be grandparents, their circumstances will be determined in part by the political form Belgium takes by then. This issue receives so much attention that we forget it presents only one of many possible questions about futures in Belgium.

To explore the other questions, ‘Belgische Toekomsten / Des Belgiques Possibles’ follows a range of Belgians who deal with images of the future in their daily practice: the comic strip maker and his imaginary Brüsel, the policy advisor with research into energy in 02050, the peace activist who hopes her cause will be won in sixty years time or the IT-specialist who describes the three-dimensional and the virtual worlds of tomorrow.

Slowly but surely, four different scenario’s for Belgian futures become apparent. Each offers a unique possibility in answer to the questions that are posed. In six decades, what might things look like here? Where can we catch a glimpse of the future today? How might we live in 02068? Would our surroundings still seem the same? Would we find ourselves in an authoritarian or in a creative society? What do we do today that will affect life in our country in sixty years time? 'Belgische Toekomsten / Des Belgiques Possibles’ demonstrates concretely that there are many options for the future in Belgium, there is not a single unavoidable path stretching out ahead of us.
